Should have held on much longer

poetry by D.e.e.L

frustration breaks down into denial
a child that should have read all those books
and passed those tests
and been famous at the age of nine
jams pencils into the pillow at age ten.

should have been there for her last piano recital
even though she broke my heart a year later

should have spent a week in paris by now
instead of never taking a single vacation day for a whole year

should have stayed at work an extra hour today
and come in an hour earlier

should have spent more time shopping
and less time breathing fresh air

should have never lost that feeling
of knowing I’d never grow up

should have written a poem tonight
before I fell to sleep
